But no, of course we can’t do that. That would be an unacceptable loss of face. It would spell the end of the unipolar order, the rules based international order – which is, of course, the same as the unipolar system – would finally collapse. It will admit that we can’t prevail against the Russians or indeed anyone else, at that.
We must look for harebrained, crazy solutions like attack on a bridge that has symbolic but no military purpose, the attack on the territory of the worlds biggest nuclear power, deployment of troops into war zones where they can’t be protected.
We must come up with fantastic, grotesque, ludicrous, inhuman plans like that because we can’t bring ourselves to admit that we were wrong.”
